D7 Visa

mostly on those who are retired and live of their pensions

LET’S DO IT

D7 Visa – Portugal Residency
What is the Portugal D7 Visa?

The D7 Visa is the Portuguese Residence program aimed at those who can live off their income. Initially, it was created thinking mostly on those who are retired and live of their pensions (designated as passive income). However, the concept of “passive income”, for this Visa,  was extended and, nowadays, the D7 Visa is granted to those who have pensions, rents, dividends, interests, or income for their intellectual property. This .. alargamento … allowed to ~encompass both Digital Nomads and the Remote Workers.

Also known as the retirement Visa or Passive Income Visa, was introduced in 2007 by the Portuguese government, allowing non-European Union/Iceland/Liechtenstein/Norway/Swiss citizens to apply for this temporary residency in Portugal. It has also been used by people wishing to obtain Portuguese Citizenship and/or a permanent residency permit, which occurs after five years of legal residence in Portugal, based on the D7 Visa.

The D7 Visa has attracted for the past years, many foreign retirees, investors, digital nomads (freelancers), and remote workers, living off of their monthly income foreign-sourced. This is why it is now generally called of passive income visa.

Besides the proof of stable passive income, the main applicant must also transfer to a Portuguese Bank Account the amount of roughly around US$ 9.500 (EUR 8.460€) or US$ 14.311 (EUR 12.690€) in case of a couple.

Once you successfully obtained your D7 Visa, it will be valid for 2 years. Afterward, you’ll be able to renew it for an additional 3 years. At the end of the 5th year, you have the right to become a Portuguese Citizen or you can renew your permit again, this time for 10 years, becoming a permanent resident.

And, best of all, a better quality of life for you and your family: warm climate, good food, affordable lifestyle, high-quality services, and friendly people, Portugal is the best country for relocating expands:

What are the general Visa requirements for the D7 Visa?

First, you will need the Portuguese TIN (NIF, in Portuguese) and the assignment of a Tax Representative

Before any residency visa application, it is mandatory to acquire a Portuguese Tax number, also known as the Número de Identificação Fiscal (or NIF for short).

Without this step, you will not be allowed to open a bank account, sign a lease contract to buy a property, a vehicle, or even start your new or existing business in Portugal.

We offer a plan to cover this step called the “first things first plan”, because your physical presence in Portugal is not needed for this step, and we will act as your tax representative until you are legally resident in Portugal.

It is strongly recommended to have a Portuguese Lawyer or Solicitor as your tax representative, due to the strict rules of professional behavior that are not ensured/binding by any other professional association.

With a Power of Attorney issued for this purpose, we can obtain your TIN (NIF) within one day.

You will also need a Portuguese Bank account

Even if it is very easy for a non-resident or foreign citizen to open a bank account in Portugal, the problem is that you will be opening a bank account remotely. Therefore, any bank will impose stricter rules for this procedure. It is very usual to assist our clients in this procedure, assuring that the bank account is open and activated in a matter of days. Single applicants must fund the account with a minimum amount of €8.460. Married couples are required to have a minimum amount of €12.690 deposited into their join bank account.

Solution? Start with our First Things First Legal Plan

We offer a plan to cover this step called the “first things first plan”, because your physical presence in Portugal is not needed for this step, and we will act as your tax representative until you are legally resident in Portugal.

Your identity and personal documents are safe with our Law Firm.
We use a secure file transfer platform with military-grade encryption for privacy where we can receive and send legal documents, personal documents and exchange sensitive information (for instance, your SSN), with maximum security.

Then, you’ll Need To Prove your Income – The most determinant requirement

As said before, to qualify for the D7 Visa, applicants must prove to earn enough passive income to support themselves in Portugal, without relying on salaried income.

The higher your passive or recurring income earnings, the more likely the chances that your visa will be approved. Below, you can have a guideline regarding the minimum income:

Minimum Recurring Income Requirement (2022) Per Month Per Year Per 2 Years (Minimum Amount for savings based application)

Income eligible to apply for the Portugal D7 Visa:
You will need to prove your accommodation in Portugal

When you are applying for the D7 Visa, you are required to present proof of accommodation. Please note that you don’t have to buy property for such purpose, but you should present, at least, a rental agreement (ideally for 12 months) or a letter from a friend or family member living in Portugal, attesting that you will live in their property.

Until 2021, hotel reservations and airbnb™ bookings were accepted but, at this moment, such documents are being rejected by some Portuguese Consulates as proof of accommodation.

ASSISTANCE BEFORE YOUR ARRIVAL IN PORTUGAL

We can provide you with assistance before you arrived in Portugal. If you are considering buying or rent a property, we can advise you regarding the property due diligence/conveyance and even help you on choosing the best location according to your preferences, helping you with neighborhood choices, choosing the best location in terms of doctors and hospitals, and whatever is necessary to make your transition as smooth as possible.

Health Insurance

All the citizens who are applying for the D7 Visa, including their family members, must present health Insurance coverage with a validity date of 12 months. This insurance must cover medical repatriation, medical emergency, and/or hospital emergency, and the minimum required coverage is EURO 30.000.

You will need to present the insurance policy once you apply for the Visa and also on the day of your appointment at SEF (Immigration and Borders Services).

Note: After you get your resident permit card, you and your family can apply for the Portuguese health care card, and the insurance is no longer mandatory.

Clean Criminal Record

Applicants older than 16 years old must present a certificate of criminal record, issued by the country of origin. If you have any minor felonies, please contact us, so we can provide full assistance. The Portuguese law required that any convictions can not be punishable with over 3 years of imprisonment, according to the Portuguese Penal Code.

Hire a Portuguese Lawyer or Solicitor

(Your physical presence is not mandatory)

You are about to start a process that will abide by the Portuguese Law and be evaluated by Portuguese Authorities. You don’t speak Portuguese and you don’t know the general rules/laws in Portugal. Did you know that there is a huge difference between a Common Law and a Continental Law country? It is better to ensure that you will have someone by your side to assist you and protect you from misinterpretations and/or deceptions due to the lack of information.

Question: can I do the D7 Visa process on my own?

Yes, you can. However, it’s highly recommended that you hire a Portuguese Lawyer or Solicitor in pursuing the program, because you will be applying for a Visa for a country that you are not familiar with (Yes, we know we are latins). You will always need the best professionals by your side, to analyse the paperwork, to perform due diligence acts, to defend your interests. That said, don’t you think you should focus all the legal assistance in a person of your trust, instead of free assistance from forums members or professionals that aren’t specialized in such matters? In Portugal, we have a saying that goes “o barato sai caro” (equivalent to the English saying “you get what you pay for”). Don’t risk your future life by trusting in comments from forums, advices from people that have a cousin that knows someone that is in Portugal under a D7.

Get a TIN (NIF) and open a Bank account

(Your physical presence is not mandatory)

One of the mandatory requirements to submit a D7 application is to hold a TIN (NIF) and a checking account on a bank located in Portugal. As said above, we offer a plan to cover this step called the “first things first plan”  and we will act as your tax representatives until you are legally resident in Portugal.

Submit the Visa Application

(Your physical presence is not mandatory)

We will apply for the D7 Visa at the nearest Portuguese Embassy/Consulate/Visa Centre in your home country or where you are resident. We will need to confirm which entity has jurisdiction where you live. Please note: the Portuguese Consulates can operate differently, especially in the US. The requirements change from time-to-time and consulates will often have their own particular requirements. At this point, we will assist you with all the documentation, including translations and certified translations of official documents.

Meet you at SEF for the biometrics meeting

(Finally, your physical presence is mandatory)

One of our professionals will assist you in the scheduled meeting at SEF for the biometrics collection. This is the only step we cannot act on your behalf: the collection of your fingerprints, picture and signature.

Get the Resident cards

(Your physical presence is not mandatory)

We will collect your resident cards and send them your way.  Each card has an initial validity of two years and, at the end of the second year, we will handle the renewal and you will get a new one, this time valid for three more years.

Get the Golden Visa Resident cards

We will collect your resident cards and send them your way.  Each card has an initial validity of two years and, at the end of the second year, we will handle the renewal and you will get a new one, this time valid for three more years.
